What is Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth or Xerostomia is the condition of not having enough saliva to lubricate the mouth. Dry mouth can happen to anyone, and can sometimes occur when people are nervous or stressed. However, if you suffer from long-term dry mouth this can cause a number of other difficulties, including chewing, swallowing and even talking. It also increases the risk for tooth decay because one of saliva's functions is to lubricate the mouth and help pass food and bacteria through the mouth and down the throat - keeping oral hygiene naturally in check.

What causes Dry Mouth?

There are many causes of xerostomia, including certain medications, cancer therapy, aging, nerve damage, smoking and other health conditions. Diabetes, Parkinson's, HIV, anxiety disorders, depression and more can cause dry mouth. Snoring and breathing with your mouth open can also be a cause.

Depending on the cause of dry mouth your GP can provide appropriate treatment. For home care, there are many steps you can take to help ease xerostomia. Drink plenty of water, chew sugarless gum, and avoid alcohol, tobacco and coffee.
